Recently the Passionist Historical Archives received several photos of tombstones which had been unearthed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are the stones of 14 Passionists who died between 1931 and 1952 and were buried in the cemetery at St. Paul's Monastery in Pittsburgh. Pictured above is the latest one
We are trying to find out when and why these stones were removed and replaced with the current headstones. Obviously the replacement was after the burial of George Hack, C.P. who died November 18, 1952.
We examined the Pittsburgh Chronicles for the period 1948-1966. Nothing about the headstones was found. All sorts of grounds changes are recorded there including the installation of the Stations of the Cross, a gate repair, and the placement of a sidewalk. For that reason, it seems odd that the change of headstones would not have been included. Perhaps the change happened after 1966.
We reason that the change would not necessarily have been shortly after 1952, because it is possible that there was a change in the type of stone used at around that time, but the old ones were not replaced until later. That is why we continued to look up until 1966.
